This breed is known by many names, but Myotonic and Fainting Goats
are the most common. Like other animals, however, the name doesn't
always perfectly describe the animal. (For instance, koala bears
are not bears, guinea pigs are neither pigs, nor from Guinea) As
such, Myotonic Goats do not actually faint. They have a condition
called "Myotonia" which makes the muscles lock up briefly
when they are startled or excited. They remain fully awake and are
not in any pain. Whatever you choose to call them, it is an amazing
breed.
I choose Myotonics because they are a gentle, friendly and healthy
breed. While
they can have health problems, as any animal can, Myotonics are
more parasite resistant than other breeds of goat. They are also
easy kidders, low maintenance, and multi-purpose goats. The Myotonics
I have at this time are the smaller "pet" to mid-size.
Our new buck, Freckles, is a larger "meat type" myotonic
goat. I will be working on developing the two sizes seperately.
Myotonics have a variety of uses including:
~Higher
meat/bone ratio than other meat breeds.
~Can
be milked, although do not produce as much as Dairy breeds.
~Gentle
and Friendly, they make wonderful pets.
~Some
produce a cashmere coat that can be spun.
